In December, South Africa’s second “Mini-World Youth Day” was held in Durban. Around 4000 young people from around the country (and from a few other Southern African countries) converged on the Durban Exhibition Centre for 4 days of fun, fellowship and worship. I had an awesome time just being a part of this amazing celebration! The masses were concelebrated by hundreds of priests (and many bishops), the catechesis sessions were presented by South African bishops and the vocations stalls were manned (and womanned) by scores of religious throughout the week. What an incredible experience to be together with so many young dedicated Catholics!
We were privileged enough to be asked to run our own “vocations” stall as Theology of the Body South Africa over the course of the week. One thing was clear from our 96 hours at MWYD, speaking to young people and answering questions, and that is that the youth of our country is crying out for truth. There is so much confusion today when it comes to the issues of life relating to relationships, sex and sexuality, but our experiences this week, while challenging, were still incredibly hopeful. It was easy to see that many of the young people we spoke to at MWYD were seeking our Lord through the questions they were asking.
The truth about God’s plan for love, marriage and sex is truly beautiful. This week for me was so profound because God showed me that it is for this beauty that all those we spoke to are longing. Too often unfortunately we are taught, or concern ourselves with, the “NO’s” instead of the “YES’s” of God’s plan and calling in our lives. Without the beauty of the “YES”, the “NO” will never really ake much sense, or even seem worth it. Pope Saint John Paul II presents the beauty of saying Yes to Our Lord and the glory of His plan for love, life and sex. We did our best to present that for all who would listen this weekend. I pray and trust that the Holy Spirit will water any seeds He planted in heart this last week. If you were at MWYD and didn’t get to speak to us contact us today. If you did, leave us a comment below. God bless you!
